In XiTsonga "Pfunanane" means "Let's help each other" and Pfunanane was established with that very vision in mind - to reach out and help families in the rural areas surrounding Modjadjiskloof, through a quality Christian education and a commitment to support, sponsor and provide homes for local orphans and vulnerable children. In 1997, Engela DeVilliers began the school with a heart and passion to establish a place where AIDS orphans would be provided with love, education, support, and opportunity. With only 5 children at its beginning, today Pfunanane has 200 students, preschool through grade 7, and is home to 19 children, with plans to build more housing for orphans and vulnerable children.
Governed by the great commission to "go and make disciples of all nations" (Matthew 28:19), Pfunanane has a heart and passion to model Christianity to those around us, and this begins through our children. They are included in local outreach efforts - collecting and delivering clothes and food to surrounding communities, going into hospitals to pray with and sing to the sick, helping poor families - the children themselves take ownership of Pfunanane's vision to be Christ's hands to those who need help.
"For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me..."
Matthew 25:35-36
